I just got my anime society from rightstuf and they gave me a copy of Shonen Jump. Information technology is all washed from correct to left and they explain why that is the instance on the back cover. Information technology all makes sense, which made me wonder. I wouldn't mind either way. I only would like to know what I am in for if I do ever make up one's mind to first getting into manga.

All manga is read correct to left. There are people who telephone call their comics "manga" that print them from left to right only they are posers and don't count.

Because I experience the need to betoken this out...Manga is Japanese and is read right to left. There are American comics sold past companies like TOKYOPOP marketed every bit American manga...That stuff is read left to right...Like Van Von Hunter. The same goes for Korean manhwa which is also read left to correct...Like Snow Drop.
  • #6
Yeah, but one time yous keep reading them, it volition exist second nature. I can at present read both ways.
  • #vii
If you have any respect for the author you will desire information technology to be right-to-left, same way you lot want your DVD's to be original aspect ratio and not total screen.

This thread was useless after Ghosts mail. I take nothing to add together [face_tongue]

well since it hasn't been adressed, and the guy seems to exist a newbie to manga I'lls ay this

in japan it's ALWAYS correct to left, in fact it'southward non just manga, but books and magazines... it is typically read like this...

starting at what would exist the dorsum of the book/manga/whatever starting from the acme, reading the right hand pannels than over to the left... the characaters in the give-and-take bubbles are typically written elevation to lesser, as is don in japanese, rather than left to correct.... merely when information technology is written horizontally, y'all read it left to right

but since your probably not reading in japanese the grapheme guild shouldn't be important....

now in america, and other western palces manga coems in 2 means...

the loyal right to left way, or the "flipped" left to right style

flipped refers to flipping the pages horizontaly, like a mirror image... this is and so it reads liek typical american comic books.. of course this kind of ruins the composition, messes up lettering within the art (like on t-shirts or hats, or buildings) which is and so often edited back to normality... by butchering the art farther...

Most early manga releases likewise as some current release left to right "flipped" still but as manga grows in popularity it is becomming more common to see loyaly preserved format... right to left...

youc an usually tell by the manga itself, on the exterior... if the front of the manga is on what would normally be the back then it is loyal, and if the front is where we would see information technology on a western comic, it is "flipped"

since flipped manga, flips the entire folio, y'all would read that exactly as you would a western comic... pannel order and all

It isn't exactly always just just a vast majority of the time.

The only example of a manga that is supposeed to read left to right is Madara, but that was done equally a nod to American comics

Well, really for the tape, cypher later the first reply was necessary. Everything that has been posted here subsequently my second post is clearly explained in the back of this Shonen Jump book. They state that some early works had been switched, which made the fine art not piece of work. Myself being an intelligent man figured out exactly how that would cause a problem. They besides have a wonderful diagram that shows how you are supposed to read the pages. And when the "back" said Shonen Jump, I suspected something was up. Actually, all I wanted to know was if this was because it was the "Free Collectors Edition" or if this was what I should expect if I started to purchase other manga, as has been suggested to me on the anime boards. Sorry if I wasn't more clear.

And then thanks for all the input, but you tin all let this thread die. :)

Here's my question for those maxim Japanese manga is Always correct to left...

I take these ii Record of Lodoss War manga I bought in Nihon, and they read left to right. Anyone intendance to explicate?

And to some others, what do you say well-nigh American manga that's produced correct to left? Nonetheless posers?

you lot bought them in nippon, but were they japanese, or were they in english? if they wer ein english language you could have gotten your hands on an american import in japan... simply toherwise it's an anomaly

it'south non only manga that is published right to left in japan, it's EVERYTHING, magazines, books, newpapers, everything is printed that manner... of course to every rule in that location is exception.. some thigns could be printed left to right to be more than "western" lodoss wars could have done information technology because the show is mideval, a kind of homage to the origin of the contents of the story... newspapers could be printed left to correct as well for a westernized aproach, or for direct western market... like a paper pritned in english language in nippon and meant for english as a firts language readers....

while obviously some in japan could be left to right, those are CLEARLY washed in thatw ay out of western influence.. and not just equally seen to be some other option...

as for your second question, american manga rip off is allways poser unless it captures the manga qualities... publishing right to elft or elft to correct has petty to do with it...

the western takes on manga I have seen accept all missed many of the things that make manga manga.. the fine art is also sketched out, where as lines in manga are like caligraphy strokes, broadening or thining in a single motility... the american takes are all airbrushed and have ridiculous flashy colors, manga is black and white... and when in color is typically very subdued... not a agglomeration of flashy airbrushing techniques...

I ahve not seen a single western manga that I would consider manga.. only I Have seen some artist (by and large non pro) that "get it" there is a emssage baord I cannot name here, I stumbled onto an art thread and was diddled away by some of the stuff.. the lines, the expect, the design, the perspective, the use of negative space to add together dimension they had the manga way down pat... if some of them were to make manga it would be manga, and not poser stuff...

it'southward not the manga manner follows such strict rules, but the style kids elarn tod raw in japan is vastly different then how they do in the west, information technology's a compeltely different philosophy, and to me is a very very big reason why the west has not been able to imitate the mode properly

that being said, some manga artists, actually live in america... and publish in nihon....

not exactly a "manga" artist.... but Amano... the guy who did grapheme designs for final fantasy up until the seventh installment (which he only did some sketches for subsequently the design), and did the art for vampire hunter d, etc... lives in new york and has for quite some fourth dimension..

he has had several galery showings there....

soem examples of his works

^So what practice you say nigh what [link=http://www.gomanga.com]Seven Seas Publishing[/link] puts out?
looks skillful, I would telephone call that western manga, seems equally if they practise "get it"
  • #16
Madara is one of the few titles that is supposed to read left to right. Kingdom Hearts is another example of those rare types of manga that was originally made to exist left to correct.

Other actual manga being released in English in the left to correct format like Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha are flipped, meaning the artwork has been printed backwards from the original correct to left format of the Japanese version.

  • #17
Akira is read left to right too.
  • #18
If yous have any respect for the author you lot will desire it to be right-to-left, same manner yous want your DVD's to exist original attribute ratio and non full screen.
Either manner the author gets your money, and he/she approved of any direction reversing. What is the point of not ownership information technology? The author doesn't get your coin. I recollect it is 1000x more than respectful to buy a flipped manga than download a scanlation. *not maxim that you do that, though I don't think you will deny that you don't, I'chiliad just saying*

Besides, I just bought vol. 5 of Tenjho Tenge last night. All the edited sexual activity I can get. [face_blush]

  • #19
If you want to buy information technology and support the author then buy the original which is unbutchered.

You call back you're and so holy by buying a butchered manga just because it "supports the author". Grow some assurance. Padding the authors wallet does not come before showing respect to the authors work.

  • #20
Ownership the edited manga however supports the writer, and he/she certianly doesn't experience "disrespected" when I do.

I don't purchase the original because I can't read Japanese, and bluntly don't run across a good reason to. No kittens die when I read Tenjho Tenge or Akira (which is oversized and flipped), I don't really meet why I need to appease manga elitists by ownership the originals then reading scripts.

And yes, buying edited manga does show more respect than but, I don't know, reading it at the library or in the bookstore. I'm showing the writer that I really appreciate his/her work, putting money where my oral cavity is.

I don't remember I'm "holy" and I have balls, I'g confused to why you lot were so quick with the personal attacks. Is supporting Oh!Great by buying CMX X Ten that offensive to yous? Let me inquire you: are you a manga elitist? When other people phonation their enjoyment of edited manga, does that brand your skin crawl or make you want to make them feel bad? I don't experience bad when I read Ten Ten, in fact I bask it very much. Why does this bother you to the point of trying to insult me?

  • #21
I'grand not asking you lot to appease me or anyone else. I don't give a flying **** what you waste your coin on.

I'm showing the author that I respect his work by non giving coin to a visitor that hacks upwards his work and tries to market his series to early teens when that's non even who it'south intended for.

If you find enjoyment out of information technology, good for you. But I won't waste material my money on something that doesn't deserve it.

My point was simply that if supporting the author is your main reason for buying manga then you're ameliorate off supporting him by buying his manga unedited.

And it does annoy me when people like you purchase manga such equally this considering information technology shows these companies that people are willing to settle for their crap simply because that's the only choice. CMX is the only one releasing TenTen officially in English in the US, so if they **** information technology up so you can't read information technology, so you lot're willing to settle. That does bother me. They take a monopoly over the property. If that's beingness elitist and then alright. I have elitist mentalities, yeah.

  • #22
Well thank you for explaining your position. It's non similar I want manga to exist edited, I'm but not really motivated to buy unedited products.
  • #23
Which is perfectly understandable. I don't imagine most people would. I acknowledge that reading manga with text scripts is certainly not the virtually fun fashion to read manga.
  • #24
and he/she approved of any direction reversing.
WRONG

also by buying the original japanese version more of the coin gets to the manga-ka

  • #25
Which is perfectly understandable. I don't imagine most people would. I admit that reading manga with text scripts is certainly not the most fun way to read manga.
sounds assy. When I read a book, I want to be able to read information technology without the internet. That just doesn't make sense to me. It would be only every bit stupid if a Japanese imported an X Men comic so find the translation on the internet. I mean, yes they modify information technology a bit, only the ones I read are usually non that bad. Sometimes being picky with manga tin ruin the fun of it. Merely if you want to import information technology, get ahead. Just the mangaka will nonetheless get the coin.
  • #26
The deviation is that the mangaka will become the money, and not a crappy company along with information technology.

You lot see, when yous buy CMX's TenTen manga you are non only "supporting" the author you are supporting a crappy release and supporting CMX for doing it.

  • #27
Who is CMX? Is the TenTen manga actually then bad. What about companies like Shonen Jump and Dark Equus caballus, do they practice the same thing. You just have me very curious now.
  • #28
CMX is a subsidiary branch nether DC Comics who is new to the manga market and has about 10 or so titles in their library. Their most pop titles are Tenjho Tenge, Gals! (manga that Super Gals anime is based on), and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne.

Basically they did a real butchering of Tenjho Tenge. They edited artwork all over the identify and changed dialogue in attempts to tone the series downwardly to shounen level, when it's supposed to be a seinen title that runs in Ultra Bound mag in Japan.

[link=http://digitalsin.bebopboard.internet/index2.html]Run across this site for what they did to it. Click on Book 1 and 2 and they have scans comparing the US version to the original[/link] It's one of the most edited titles in contempo memory.

As for Shonen Jump and Viz, Viz does their share of censoring also, but nowhere virtually on the same level as CMX and Tenjho Tenge. But notwithstanding, censorship is censorship and they are still to arraign. Viz has made edits (to my noesis) in Hikaru no Go, Prince of Lawn tennis, Naruto, Dragon Brawl Z, Dr. Slump, and some others I can't think of.

Dark Horse is consistently quality. They're releasing Berserk completely uncut, amongst other series. They've fabricated edits in the past to the Narutaru manga but other than that they're solid.

  • #29
Is the Akira manga completely unedited, other than the flipped art. And that sucks about Tenjho Tenge, I was intrested in it.
  • #30
Whoa, those edits are malicous and that was just vol. 1. What excatly is this series about, seems like sex and sex, which is hot.
  • #31
Seeing how the Usa release of Akira shows errect penises, I think information technology's completely unedited.

Tenjho Tenge is starting to go really good, it's near a high school that has lots of fighting clubs follows characters from to principal clubs, the Juken club and the Executive Committee, and at present (vol 5) is getting into the backstory of the characters. I beloved the fine art/character design, oh!keen is probably one my favorite manga artists. I'g happy Air Gear (which is also by him) is comming to the Usa before long. But equally far as the edits get, aye, they're lame, I'd rather it not be edited, only it'due south not that big of a deal for me. The story is all the same the same and 95% of the fine art, I think it's a pretty fun manga, uh.... "warts" and all.

  • #32
Akira has penis? :^O

anyhow, I may check out Tenjho Tenge. May buy both the import and U.s. release.

You hateful similar Night Horse?[face_rolling_eyes]

Not all Manga is correct to left- it's just that most of it is. It *should* all be right to left but sometimes publishers get a funny idea that Americans would prefer left to right. Withal, in cases such every bit Night Horse they still take not bad intendance with the flipping process. Blade of the Immortal is flipped but the flipping is ok'd past Hiroaki Samura so it'due south all good.

My agreement is that Japanese is read correct to left when the characters are written vertically, as is traditional. But if information technology's written horizontally information technology's read left to right. So in the few cases mentioned of manga that were published in Nippon to be read left to right, was the text prepare horizontally or vertically?
  • #35
I don't fabricated flipping when it is taken care of to still look good and read correctly. Similar Akira is.

Ahhh, the good old "flipped" argument.

Well, not and so much an argument as elitistic pricks who care manner more about the way other people read manga than anybody actually associated with the projection.

Hither's the deal. In an platonic world, all manga would be perfectly translated and kept in the original format. We don't alive in an ideal earth and sometimes manga, especially in the early days, gets flipped.

Boo !@#$ing hoo.

It doesn't bother me that Rally Vincent is driving on the left side of the road. I know she'southward driving really fast, which is the of import matter to sympathise.

Flipped manga is a mild annoyance at worst. Not near worth the try certain fanatics put into crucifying it. There'south a lot of worse things that tin can happen to a manga. Negima's translation issues for instance.
